The Differences…

I’m from the West Coast.

We don’t “cook out”. We “BBQ”.

We don’t push “buggies” at the store. We push “shopping carts”.

We go to “Mc Donald’s”. Not ” ‘The’ Mc Donald’s”.

Next month it’s “July”. Not “Joo-Lie”

We run up “Hills”. Not “Heels”.

We order “Dr. Pepper” when we want Dr. Pepper. We do not order “Coke” then specify the kind of Coke we want. ie: Dr. Pepper.

These are just a few things I have noticed since I arrived in Nashville.

Anything else I’m missing?

  1. Most excellent beginning. The list will grow by the week. So happy to have you in the South! I hope its feeling more like "home" and not a vacation! I think of you often.

    • i grew up eating grits. love them! with a little butter and sugar….yay me!

i think its pretty humid right now but everyone says its nothing compared to what's coming. grrr….

  2. Have you heard anyone say that they're "fixing to" go somewhere/do something? Instead of "about to"?? LOL That's one of my favorite Southernisms. Again, welcome!!!

  3. "You have a call parked" – there is a call waiting for you on your phone extension. Never heard that til I moved to GA. Now that I'm away from there I don't hear it anymore.

Adding an "S" to the end of store names. "Fixin to carry the kids to Wal-Marts or Krogers"

  4. So how do they say, 'oil'? In Texas (if I remember right) it was 'awl'. I'd be surprised if 'Oregon' was right too (or is it us who say it wrong =)!

    D-

  5. okay okay…stepping in here as a Nashvillian…

First of all, what hillbilly section of Nashville did you move to? You have to be outside of town like north of Nashville. Hendersonville or Gallatin. No one around me says Joolie, Heels or orders a DP like that…hmmm…and I'm from the PNW so it usually stands out. Come to our side of town and you can feel a little more normal :)

Now, that said. As you get around the outskirts of the city and get more rural, I bet you will here some of these things.

Cook Out is also equal to Grillin Out. BBQ is specific and means literally BBQ, which "folks" take seriously around here especially slow cooked ribs. You will learn what a smoker is real quick too….not someone lighting up a heater :)

You might also here "We stay in Nashville or we stay with family" Stay=Lives in some areas.

I'm sure I will find more for you but seriously…you have to leave your part of town a little. You have some redneck neighbors :)

  6. Take out vs. carry out? That was an odd one to adjust to. Also, the best story my mom ever had was she went shopping the first 2 weeks we lived in TN and she was asking for Bread Crumbs for turkey stuffing. The guy kept telling her they were in the "bakin" isle, she heard "bacon"….he was clearly saying Baking! She was so confused and spent almost 20 minutes wandering around the store looking for a bacon isle.

  7. "cut off" the light" instead of "turn off the light" I grew up in central NY state and moved to SC 3 years ago. :) so i had to learn like you are now! the buggy at the store in the best though, i still take a few seconds to respond to that b/c i am thinking what is a buggy! ha!

  8. you probably don't cut on the light, you turn it on
you probably don't mash the button, you push it
you probably don't carry someone to the Wal*Mart, you drive em there

Oh, and when you say "Bless your heart" it actually means that you hope that their heart is blessed! :)
