I’m from the West Coast.
We don’t “cook out”. We “BBQ”.
We don’t push “buggies” at the store. We push “shopping carts”.
We go to “Mc Donald’s”. Not ” ‘The’ Mc Donald’s”.
Next month it’s “July”. Not “Joo-Lie”
We run up “Hills”. Not “Heels”.
We order “Dr. Pepper” when we want Dr. Pepper. We do not order “Coke” then specify the kind of Coke we want. ie: Dr. Pepper.
These are just a few things I have noticed since I arrived in Nashville.
Anything else I’m missing?
Taking a stab here, but I'd imagine sweet tea is popular down there. Am I right?
you are correct! it's too sweet for me. so when i order tea in a restaurant i get half sweet tea and half unsweetened tea mixed together. its delish!
And at "The McDonalds" it's 1/3 Sweet Tea and 2/3 unsweetened
i'd say it should be that at chik fil a too.
Assuming you drink soda and they drink pop
yes sir!
we don't put "the" in front of the freeway names. . .
In Northern California's defense, neither do we. We drive on 580 or up 680. However, we concede…when we go down to Los Angeles we take "the 5." (However, as an SF Bay Area native I say "hella.")
i've only heard that a couple times so far.
Most excellent beginning. The list will grow by the week. So happy to have you in the South! I hope its feeling more like "home" and not a vacation! I think of you often.
fran, it really is feeling like home. while i miss my family in oregon tremendously, i am so glad to be here!
I bet you've rediscovered your "accent" pretty quickly since being back there.
oh, friend, it has crept in every now and then
O_o
BBQ = Slow smoking all day
Grill = cooking meat over fire
or so i've learned since moving to Austin
i dont know if i'll ever get used to that.
Have you discovered humidity? And grits? Though those two things are not necessarily related.
i grew up eating grits. love them! with a little butter and sugar….yay me!
i think its pretty humid right now but everyone says its nothing compared to what's coming. grrr….
Have you heard anyone say that they're "fixing to" go somewhere/do something? Instead of "about to"?? LOL That's one of my favorite Southernisms. Again, welcome!!!
confession: ive said "fixin to" all my life. my mama says it all the time. so that slang i have taken care of =)
"You have a call parked" – there is a call waiting for you on your phone extension. Never heard that til I moved to GA. Now that I'm away from there I don't hear it anymore.
Adding an "S" to the end of store names. "Fixin to carry the kids to Wal-Marts or Krogers"
yes! i've heard the added "s" on words. that is funny!
Sounds like you didn't know how to speak before…
haha!!!
maybe :/
but there is one thing I know about sweet Tam Tam – she knows how to say "pellow"
So how do they say, 'oil'? In Texas (if I remember right) it was 'awl'. I'd be surprised if 'Oregon' was right too (or is it us who say it wrong =)!
D-
okay okay…stepping in here as a Nashvillian…
First of all, what hillbilly section of Nashville did you move to? You have to be outside of town like north of Nashville. Hendersonville or Gallatin. No one around me says Joolie, Heels or orders a DP like that…hmmm…and I'm from the PNW so it usually stands out. Come to our side of town and you can feel a little more normal
Now, that said. As you get around the outskirts of the city and get more rural, I bet you will here some of these things.
Cook Out is also equal to Grillin Out. BBQ is specific and means literally BBQ, which "folks" take seriously around here especially slow cooked ribs. You will learn what a smoker is real quick too….not someone lighting up a heater
You might also here "We stay in Nashville or we stay with family" Stay=Lives in some areas.
I'm sure I will find more for you but seriously…you have to leave your part of town a little. You have some redneck neighbors
hahaha!!! i DO live h'ville!
dang.
instead of "take" people to the store?
butt ton. noted.
Take out vs. carry out? That was an odd one to adjust to. Also, the best story my mom ever had was she went shopping the first 2 weeks we lived in TN and she was asking for Bread Crumbs for turkey stuffing. The guy kept telling her they were in the "bakin" isle, she heard "bacon"….he was clearly saying Baking! She was so confused and spent almost 20 minutes wandering around the store looking for a bacon isle.
ya know…im actually surprised there *aren't* bacon aisles here!
"cut off" the light" instead of "turn off the light" I grew up in central NY state and moved to SC 3 years ago.
so i had to learn like you are now! the buggy at the store in the best though, i still take a few seconds to respond to that b/c i am thinking what is a buggy! ha!
you probably don't cut on the light, you turn it on
you probably don't mash the button, you push it
you probably don't carry someone to the Wal*Mart, you drive em there
Oh, and when you say "Bless your heart" it actually means that you hope that their heart is blessed!
