lifestyle check in.

hey y’all! remember this post from a couple weeks ago?

mhmm. a bunch of you, my friends, decided to jump in with me on this journey to better eating and exercise. remember?

well, its time for some updates and accountability. i know…you love me. just admit it.

here’s my update.

i stopped counting.

calories.

counting calories, apparently, was hurting me more than benefiting me.

i thought in order to lose weight i needed X amount of calories and no more than that. so i would never go over my allotted amount…and i lost weight.

the result = im thin.

BUT – thin does not always equate healthy.

i learned from my trainer/nutritionist friend that my calorie counting ways was starving my body. ive lost mass amounts of muscle. in fact, years ago my rheumatologist informed me of my “too low muscle mass”.  i’ve become “thin” because my muscle has been depleted to a concerning level of low. my fat percentage makes up 1/3 of my total body weight.

that is not good.

by eating no more than 1,300 calories a day i hurt myself. i was choosing all the wrong foods and not eating the correct combinations.

that has changed. it had to change. my health depends on it.

now…i eat like a mad woman. every 2-3 hours and the combinations and food choices are very specific and intentional. im choosing whole grains, fruits and veggies and lean proteins. i still treat myself to a frozen oreo now and then and i did not cut out my starbucks double shot on ice, mnope.

i am not getting back on the scale. i am keeping a close eye on my body and how my clothes fit. and i can tell you, i already feel a ton better.

ive been regularly at the gym on the elliptical and weight machines.

part of me gets very frustrated that, at nearly 40 years of age, im barely getting all this right. but, at least im doing something now. i can’t afford not to.

so, how are you all doing?

  1. Today marks the start of a "get healthy/weight loss" initiative at our young adults program at church. It's called "Minimise Me".
It's also girls v guys, which will make it interesting.

Last night after church we had our first (girls) weigh in. Our weight isn't tracked by anyone in the group, only if you want to do it yourself.
We were presented with a healthy eating plan, and exercises we have to do each day. We're also training together each saturday.

I've joined this, but am doing it in conjunction with the weight loss program I'm already on. It's not easy, but I'm determined to make it work.

And then I went and had a timtam for morning tea. With my piece of fruit :)

    • i love that the adults group is doing this together. it really does help to have others along side you. kass is doing everything with me, she's doing great too, but its fun to have her as a partner as well.

and i am so proud of you, paula!!

  2. I spent a week being sick. There was all sorts of not eating well since I didn't feel well enough to get to the grocery store. Not a good way to loose weight. But this whole living in Pasadena thing has been great. I can walk just about everywhere. I'm useless in a gym. I'm too much of an extravert to work out by myself, so walking in addition to hockey is helping. It's interesting learning to balance eating better with exercise. One is more expensive and the other is more time consuming. Not easy.

  3. im so glad youre feeling better, matt. i know being sick just wrecks you for awhile.

eating healthy definitely can be expensive. if i had a green thumb i would SO have a garden. but, well, that would just be a huge waste of time.

  4. umm… I know this post isn't really for me, so I won't take much time. Can you please explain the frozen oreo thing? Am I overthinking this? You put an oreo in the freezer, wait awhile, and then eat it?

    • i dont know if i was supposed to laugh at this. but i did. maybe cuz its late. but this is funny.

yes. put an oreo in the freezer. it doesnt freeze to the point of needing to thaw before eating…but it gets super cold and the frosting, i mean lard, is super cold. for some reason, imo, it taste better.

try it. lemme know what you think.

and then come back and make me laugh again.

      thanks.

      • Sometimes I write a post on my blog and get a comment. I broke a sweat climbing back up to mine here…

So, I put 3 oreos in the freezer for about 24 hours. Today I ate them. umm… they tasted the same, but I guess I was a little excited about the *snap* sound they made when I bit in. I smile a little inside just thinking about it, but I think I prefer non-frozen milk dippy ones.

Yes, you were supposed to laugh – and answer the dang question. Which you did. Good.

  5. doing good! keeping with the not eating late at night (weekends look a bit different, but that's life!) and getting back into running even more which I love :) now to just throw in some weight training… :)
p.s. i agree frozen oreos are delicious! and glad you're feeling better already!!

      • i agree…food just tastes better at night! especially cookies and ice cream and bread. ha, i love bread :)
now it seems like i've always been a runner…but i actually hated running and was a tennis player through and through–still am–but since it's hard to always find people to play with at the same level, i picked up running after college. so just about 3 years :) now, i love it. plus, i memorize scripture and pray best when running/cool down! :)

          • aw, you should play! it's great fun–especially doubles if you like laughing :) just a little hand eye coordination and you're set!
do you run or have a sport preference?

          • oooo….you said "hand eye coordination"…. thats like a cuss word in my world. in other words…i have none. its a hilarious, really.

im anti sports. they make me sweat. thats why its a miracle im at the gym 4 days a week. sweating.

            baby steps.

          • ha, well, then you'll get a few more laughs and probably have a great time playing tennis then as long as you play with someone else without hand eye coordination! :)

sweating so had to come after the fall….i wish it would go away. i once had a tennis coach give me an award for "hardest worker" and yeah…..he definitely mentioned my keen ability to get very sweaty….sure makes a girl want to play more! ;)

  6. Today marks seven whole days without a coke. *cheers, then cries*

I've also started the same diet plan (though I call it "slimming" sounds so much more graceful that "dieting", don't you think?) that Adam is on, since Cora gave up the boob and is hoe-ing into the baby food like a baby possessed.

I'm thinner, but it's been a tough week. For starters, Troy has had one of the most… trying… weeks to date and secondly, my body decided to kick back into fertility mode. So not only had I cut out all coke, sugar and other coping mechanisms, I was premenstural as well. And then menstural. Oy vey.

      • Erm… I have no idea :) Surprisingly, I only had a migraine for one day (thank you Lord, for carrying me through that) which was a bit special, concidering I would normally drink any where from 20oz- 68+oz a day. At the moment, it's just making the decision NOT to buy it. If I don't have it, I won't drink it, right? I'm a creature of habit, so there are certain times it's harder… like music practice for curch, when I fill the car up, when I'm cleaning the house or when I'm stressed out. I'll be good. I'm going away on retreat on Friday, so I'll probably toss the slimming then (because we all know that callories are one of the evils that can't get past the hedge of protection prayed around it) but I think it would be wise to still stay off the hard stuff. ;)

  7. Believe it or not, people groups that eat only mostly animals for food (hunter gatherers) actually have hardly any (if any at all) occurrences of these disorders. We've been programmed to believe that a diet low in fat and high in grains is good for us.

It's not. It's good for business. It's good for big agriculture. It's cheap. Why is it cheap? Because the government subsidizes it. Why? Because of the incredibly immense lobbying force they have….NOT BECAUSE IT'S so healthy. If it were, why is our society so sick and fat after almost half a century of this low-fat, high grain diet??

Keep up the good work everyone. But I guarantee if you cut grains and starches out of your diet (or at least cut them way back) you'd see better results. I've been eating bacon and eggs for breakfast for 3 weeks, lots of beef, chicken, and fish and lots of salad and veggies. NOT ONE WHOLE GRAIN. And I'm doing fabulous, but don't just take my word for it.

    DIG DEEPER!

    • Oh, by the way, TAM KUDOS on the not counting calories. It's not really necessary!!

And I'm sorry for ranting like a lunatic. I start with one sentence and then 20 minutes later I wake up from a haze realizing I've posted 3 weeks worth of nutritional information on your blog… HA!

      • rant all you want russy! =)

im gonna look into those links you shared too.

        heres my eating right now…
        breakfast
1/4 old fashioned oats (i know…grain) with stevia, fresh fruit of my choice and cinnamon.
3 egg whites with sauteed veggies

        snack
        fruit

        lunch
whole grain bread, 1 slice. but mind you…these are grains straight from the earth. i do believe there is a difference. God did put it there. but i'll research it more. on this bread slice i will have 1 svg of turkey with lettuce, tomato and any other veggie i like on it. this, with a side of more veggies or fruit.

        snack
veggies or fruit. if fruit i have 1T of adams natural peanut butter with it.

        dinner
protein and veggies til i cant eat no more.

what ive been doing here is eating the rainbow in fruits and veggies. i try to consume all the colors of the rainbow in each food group a day. it isnt easy but its getting better.

        i feel better!

when my friend measured my body fat she found i had 43 lbs of fat on my person. that is SO unhealthy. yet…all my life ive tried to abide by the pyramid. it hasnt worked out so well. then i started counting calories and i made it worse.

scary thing is…the fat around my stomach has begun to harden. which indicates it is/will be, pushing its way back and solidifying around my organs. why is this worse for me? i have lupus. the kind of lupus i have effects my organs. it already has my lungs and liver. i can not allow this to continue. my life literally depends on this change!

        • I'm glad you're taking steps to dig deeper into your own health. It's so much more than just counting calories.

One of the reasons why I'm so adamant against grains is because they are basically sugar. Weight gain/loss is all about your metabolic hormones. Insulin and glucagon. If either of those two hormones are out of wack, so too will your health be…

Grains (though natural) are a carbohydrate food which is processed into the blood as sugar. More sugar equals more insulin. More insulin equals more fat storage (and all the health problems that come along with it).

I've also done some reading on apple versus pear shaped people. MOST women are pear shaped…carrying their excess weight lower in their hips and lower. MOST men are apple shaped carrying the excess weight in their spare tire area (gut).

That being said, some women actually carry excess abdomen weight as well…which…as you said…can actually begin to accumulate around the organs. Not good!!

One of my favorite authors on the subject is Dr. Michael Eades (and his wife Dr. Mary Dan Eades). They are some of the most cutting edge researches AND practitioners of metabolic and nutrition based treatments. A book I've been devouring lately is called Protein Power. You should check it out. It's categorized into good sections, so you don't have to read the whole thing.

          • one of the things ive learned recently about carbs ("good" carbs) is that its essential to eat them, although in very low amts, WITH a protein. the protein helps to break it down and works with the grains to help them not turn into sugar in your bloodstream…rather, they turn into energy which helps boost your metabolism, which burns fat and so and and so forth.

i really trust my nutritionist with this info. for several reasons….one, shes a good friend of mine. she is a believer. she wants nothing more than to see me healthy and whole and she's not taking a dime from me while walking me through this. there is no ulterior motive here.

          • true. true.

i didnt word that correctly, obviously.

while i definitely understand keeping away from sugars. carbs being one of them. im still struggling with avoiding whole, wholesome straight from Gods earth, grains. yes they are sugar, but so is fruit. and both are naturally so. and i would never stay away from fruit.

            see my confusion with this?

          • I do indeed. The problem lies in your definition of grains. You say they are "wholesome" but for the most part you have to work really hard to get them in an edible form. Fruits and veggies on the other hand are ready to eat without any prep.

Also, grains really don't have that much nutritional value to them. Sure they have a few minerals and maybe vitamins, but the lectins, phytates, and gluten in them make those nutrients biounavailable…which means either your body has to work REALLY hard to get them…or more likely, your body doesn't get them at all.

The grain passes through your gut ripping and shredding it's way through the maze. While it's banging up against and rupturing your insides, it causes those cell walls to rupture spilling mucus out. While this does lubricate your insides causing you to be more "regular" – when is rupturing the inside of your gut a good thing?

Scientists swear that it's a good thing…but you can get MORE nutrients from green leafy veggies and soluble fiber (fiber really being the ONLY reason that I can think of that people are so into grains) by eating fruit.

Some of the touted benefits of "fiber" are lowers cholesterol. If you switch form a high REFINED carb diet to a whole grain diet you WILL SEE a small change in your cholesterol for the better. That being said people who eat high-fat, high-protein diets (that are loaded with "high cholesterol" foods) end up lowering there cholesterol faster and better than the whole grain route.

Reduces cancer? Not the whole grain variety. Studies show that people who have lowered their risks for cancer by including high-fiber diets got most of their fiber from vegetables. Vegetable fiber is better than carbohydrate fiber.

Soluble fiber slows the stomach emptying process which basically gives your body more time to process the sugars that are coming in to your blood stream. If it's soluble fiber from grains it doesn't make much sense to slow the process because there are not that many nutrients available in those grains…and the body just absorbs the sugar. If it's soluble fiber from vegetables, the process is slowed and the body has more time to absorb all the nutrients (way more than grains) in the vegetables.

One is clearly better than the other.

            Continued in next reply.

          • Technically, you wouldn't eat fruit every day if you had to rely on the "natural" cycle of things. Nor would you eat grains every day. They grow in seasons.

That being said grains are "crop" foods that didn't really exist like they do now before big civilizations. The grains we eat en masse like wheat, oats, barley, etc. were just wild grasses that birds and rodents fed on. Corn actually falls into that category as well. Before we learned to "manufacture" commodity crops it was just a small wild grass. The huge ears of corn we have today aren't natural, and they don't really have any bioavailable nutrients in them.

So, to summarize this term paper :)

Wheat isn't really "natural" (at least as not as big agricultural giants want you to think it is) and compared to fruits and veggies it really pales in comparison nutritionally.

            This is fun.

          • I've also been doing some reading this morning on Lupus as well. And there seems to be a bit of evidence that grains might aggravate it. I honestly don't know much about Lupus and would never presume to act as if I did.

That being said, gluten and sugar (both in grains) are PRO-INFLAMMATORY foods. Meaning that if you eat them regularly you're setting the stage for inflammatory food.

There's a lot of evidence that backs up that most pre-grain (or non-grain) civilizations don't have any evidence of arthritis on their skeletal remains. Which is circumstantial at best, but definitely makes one think. If grains are a big factor in inflammation then why eat them? If they have no nutritional value (phytates in them make the few minerals and vitamins hard to get to) why eat them? If you can get plenty of soluble fiber from your RAINBOW of veggies, why eat grains?

I know it's hard to just cut grains out of your diet for some people. We've been eating them for so long. But if you knew THEY were potentially the cause of your ailments, would you cut them out? I would!! In fact I did!!

          • actually…a ton of foods are natural inflammatory's. its a pain, literally. i should avoid all night shade veggies. flour, sugar, caffeine, acidic fruits. some meat proteins.

seriously…not a lot left after that.

lupus is a very, very tricky disease. it puts on a different face almost every day. i never know how it will attack me. like for instance…this new eating and exercise is good for me. its building up my immune system. so thats good right? not according to lupus. when my immune system is high and healthy, white cell count between 6 and 10 thousand, the lupus attacks me. the dummy set of cells thinks there is something wrong cuz it is convinced it must suppress my immune system and keep it around 3,000. which is pretty low.

so all this to say…exercise is a gamble. eating healthy foods for me is even a gamble. i almost cant win at this stage. so im just doing the best i can. perhaps i shouldnt eat 1 slice of whole grain bread a day. i dont know. and putting tomatoes on it and having a clementine orange…all healthy choices…isnt good for me either.

im kinda in a pickle. oh, and they are bad for me too.

          • and ive often tried to categorize my body into a "shape" and i cant. i seriously think i dont have one. im kinda…straight. is that a shape? =)

did i mention that kassidi is doing all this new lifestyle with me? this is a huge thing! and im so glad she hoppe on board! obviously brent is working with a trainer too…my trainers husband. and im slowly getting kota over into our side =o im signing him up at the gym this week. it only cost 5 dollars for kids. awesome! with homeschooling now i'll use this as P.E.. perfect!

          • Sweeet! Physical activity is important. Varied physical activity is even MORE important! Try and keep it mixed up.

Don't tell anyone but I'm working hard on a journey towards certification and possibly even going to school for nutrition. It has been so INTRIGUING to me the last few months. I think it's where I want to go in the next season of life! Wheeeee!

          • And I'll be one of those "Alternative" nutrition folks because I am convinced that conventional wisdom about modern nutrition is mostly wrong.

            Heh!

          • SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! Are you homeschooling this year/!?!?! (sorry, i'm reading through this AMAZING "conversation" and loving it. Back to be being quiet now)

  8. I remember…And I appreciate the nudge. Actually I don't. But I appreciate you. And I needed the nudge. So I have been good, then better, and then this weekend just kind of bad. I'd lost 5 pounds and put 2 back on. I've been way more diligent about the gym. Probably averaging 3.5 times a week. Trying to find the balance in it.

Hope you still want to hang out with me! Cuz you are going to have to! I can't believe it is now down to 11 days!

  9. Okay, YOU WERE ONLY EATING 1300 CALORIES A DAY?! Dang girl, eat a freaking burger already! ;o) Just kidding, but seriously, glad you're eating more! Sounds like you have a good plan going. I've found NOT eating enough makes me feel like CRAP…. hence the last week not feeling well. I've been eating like JUNKOLA. :- Jake's mom lost a TON of weight by doing what you're doing, minus the workouts, and it was purely from the right combinations of food more times a day.

    • Honestly, i totally forgot about this whole thing until you put this up….. BUT, I've still been doing well even though I wasn't specifically doing it for this whole challenge. While my M-F online time isn't THAT much different, my weekend time has been the last two weekends. I've stayed offline the whole weekend (save for a couple MOPS related emails I had to send) and I love it! During the week I have been trying to be more aware of it, but I can't cut it out all together. I try to do it in little spurts now instead of all at once. So, it's kind of the same, just looks different. The weekend thing though is huge for me. Hopefully it'll flip flop soon and be 3 days ONLINE, and 4 days OFFLINE. ;o)

      • oh, also, if I dont have anything specific to do I try to stay off after NOON…. b/c otherwise I just waste a LOT of time online! Okay, so maybe my weekdays have changed a bit more than I thought. ;-)

        • youre a rock star with this, lady! good for you!

ive made it a practice for the last 1 or so to not open my laptop from friday all the way thru sunday. usually sunday night in bed i'll open it up and catch up on things, write a post and stuff.

ive loved it! of course…i have my iphone through the weekend but i dont spend tons of time on that either. just twittering mostly.

do you think your boys have noticed this change in you?

          • I think they have….. and I honestly I think with what is going on with Aidan lately it's making a difference. And ya know, that evil little voice in the back of my head is telling me maybe this is why he is like he is….. mom guilt has so many "voices!" But truly, it is making a difference. I know they enjoy it more…..even though they still hound me in the mornings. A friend today mentioned she has "business hours" for her home business. While I don't have a home business I do have stuff that HAS TO BE done online….. so I should set certain times and only do it then while they get a movie or something. I hate when they hound me b/c I know they don't enjoy it and neither do I.

          • I should give up Fridays too. You know I don't do internet on the phone (shoot, I rarely use my cell phone!) and we don't have television, so it'd be a total media free weekend! Can I handle that?! haha!!

Really though, I want to keep going with getting rid of it more and more. Ya know, I've even been contemplating actually WRITING PEOPLE LETTERS…… I sound so old fashioned. hahaha! I was thinking about taking some stationary on the plane and then mailing the letters when I got to the hotel. Hmmmm…..

            Love you!

          • (made me break up my comments again. I think it's my computer – even though new – that is retarded!)

        • I so need to do this. I think, I'll jsut do it all now in the morning, and then I'll get of and do the house work…

and then suddenly it's 3pm and I have to pick the kids up from school, and then nuthin's getting done.

          • I have enjoyed that part of it. Otherwise it's such a distraction for me and I get NOTHING really done. I started shutting the office door too so I can't look in here and wonder. Although today, I REALLY wanted to get back on for something and I chewed my nails to bits b/c I was fighting the urge to stay off. haha! I like that it's something that GOES AWAY so I can totally focus on other things instead of wondering "oh hey, I bet SOMETHING has changed on there I could look at." I know I can look at it after they go to bed or the next morning. It's nice. Try it! ;o)

  10. walking 2 miles atleast 3 days a week… =] hopefully will do more. im going to start fasting this week to discipline my body (like it says in scripture) and hopefully make it into a lifestyle.

    • Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a GREAT discipline both spiritually AND physically. In fact, scientists are still baffled at the benefits of IF. People who fast intermittently like 2 meals in a row or even 2-3 days at a time seem to maintain balanced systems better than those who don't. I try and fast at least once per week (and my minimum time period is two meals.

      Keep up the good work!

      • it really is a great discipline. i love fasting (i know that sounds weird to say)….especially if it's prolonged fasts. my dream is to do a 40 day water fast. =]

i pray that during this time of fasting i would be able to control whatever it is in me that craves sweets (esp chocolate). God has been able to deliver me from my addiction to a lot of things and im praying that even in this area there will be breakthrough (even if it's just something as simple as my love for chocolates)
        EditDelete

        • I fasted for two weeks once, drinking only water. It was awesome. I full on felt my spirit quieten, which is a huge deal for me.

I should do it agin some time. Hopefully the Spirit will prompt me to soon.

          • It really was a God thing. I knew without a shadow of a doubt he was calling me to this. And you know what? I was rarely hungry. During my prayer times, I would ask Jesus to carry the hunger burden for me, and He truly stepped up to the plate. I had told my husband and my pastor what I was doing (not to brag, but for accountability) and they had their concerns, but agreed that it was something God had asked me to do for Him. And I promised Adam that if I began to get too fatigued or weak to look after the children safely, then I would stop. I had planned to go the full Daniel fast after that, but I caved at a party :( I was disappointed in myself. I hope to do it again one day soon.

  11. I struggled for a few days then : I got this wonderful text from a dear friend, (she showed up out of the blue) and gave me these words from Eleanor Roosevelt “Remember no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

(I love when friend's hearts know exactly the day I neeeded them.

It hit me SQUARE between the eyes. It's now my screensaver and on my car dash (where I am a million times a day) and that crazy mirror.

I have not perfected it yet, but each days gets easier and more braver than the rest. ~ Selah

  12. I have been trying to get rid of the last of my baby weight. No one ever tells you that it's super hard the second time around!!! Anyways… I was down to my pre-prego size, and even smaller, but still had that baby bulge, you know what I'm talking about. So… this is going to sound lame… but I started doing crunches while doing other household chores. Or while standing in the kiddie pool with my kids. Seriously, that's it. Just lots of crunches while standing up or walking or sitting and watching tv. Guess what? One week later, bam. The bulge is significantly smaller. In fact, no bulge. I did this same thing two years ago after my first baby, and it worked then too. There was some occasional cardio that has gone into the last year of my life too, but nothing combated that bulge like crunches. I know people will disagree with me, but my jeans are testifying! Woohoo!

    • Your diet will take those last few little "fluffs" away too. Most trainers agree that physique is 20% exercise 80% diet. So if a person is working REALLY hard to exercise weight away but not eating clean, they are fighting an uphill battle!

      Keep up the good work!

        • Notice I didn't say lose weight :) I said take those last little "fluffs" away. If you're not as toned as you'd like to be then something is covering up the tone. Probably just a little cushion right?

Eating clean and training hard are the only REAL ways to tone up. Anything else is not sustainable and will put you in a worse off place than where you started…which is why most "diets" are so bad for you.

  13. I'm fasting, and therefore not commenting on blogs…

    Ummm.

However, since the last post, the 5 miles of walking 5 days per week is going well (not during the fast though…that's crazy), the eating right is going well (that's generally not my problem – it's the quantity, since my metabolism is slower than a sloth on solavert…)

Just need to get the strength workouts happening more consistently.

And now, back to not-commenting-on-blogs-during-my-fast. :/

    • I'd actually say that it's a good thing to get a LITTLE bit of exercise during a fast. Especially if it's outdoors. The exposure to the sun is good for vitamin D production.

And yes, you need to lift some heavy stuff a few times a week!!
